5 Day Coach Holiday

Enjoy both seaside and city on this delightful holiday, based in Scarborough with outings to atmospheric Whitby and the fairytale city of York. Scarborough is a pretty resort with two sandy bays split by a headland bearing the ruins of a twelfth century castle which has a turbulent history of medieval sieges and WWII naval bombardment. This traditional seaside town has well-maintained gardens and a Victorian funicular train linking the centre with the harbour. Don’t miss the oriental themed Peasholm Park where you’ll find Japanese gardens, a boating lake, scenic trails and waterfalls as well as the world famous Naval Warfare – a unique miniature naval battle that has been shown on TV screens across the globe. Another gem is the Rotunda Museum, set in a Grade II listed building, it displays fascinating ancient artefacts. Perhaps you’d like to view fine art at the resort’s gallery, housed in an Italianate villa in Crescent Gardens. Take a trip on the North Bay Miniature Railway, make use of the open top buses to see the sights, enjoy a cliff top stroll, or amble around the harbour.

Your Excursions

Whitby
Whitby is a jewel on the Yorkshire coast with cobbled streets and a sandy beach. Perhaps follow in the footsteps of Captain Cook, taking in the harbourside home where he came to serve his apprenticeship. This seventeenth century dwelling is now the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, housing paintings, model ships, maps and letters written by the great explorer. Whitby is also home to the haunting abbey, which, along with twelfth century St Mary’s Church, inspired Bram Stoker’s gothic tale of Dracula.

York
York is a city celebrated for its Roman, Viking and medieval heritage. It is truly a delight to explore its narrow alleyways. Don’t miss magnificent thirteenth century York Minster – an absolute gothic masterpiece of sculptured stone and stained-glass windows. The City Walls offer a pleasant walkway on both banks of the River Ouse, while York Castle is a
commanding tower, set high on a mound giving panoramic cityscapes. Perhaps take a boat trip on the River Ouse, visit the National Railway Museum or step back a thousand years at the JORVIK Viking Centre.
