Scotland’s simply spectacular North Coast 500 presents seemingly endless coastal and country roads, sweeping around meandering bends, revealing jaw-dropping landscapes. This must-do tour showcases breathtaking scenery of powder white beaches, marvellous Munros, gleaming lochs, historic castles and traditional fishing villages. It’s so much more than just a road trip. On this holiday, we explore a section of this popular circuit that has been described as ‘Scotland’s Route 66’. The itinerary features the spa town of Strathpeffer, the Viking settlement of Wick, far-flung John O’Groats, and an overnight stay in Thurso, a coastal town with a lovely esplanade and historic ruins. Our NC500 route continues, taking in the remote and pretty as a picture hamlets of Tongue and Durness, then onwards to the seaside resort of Gairloch, the jewel in Wester Ross’s crown. Treats along the way take in the Highland capital of Inverness, and a morning at the unique Inverewe Gardens.
