5 Day Coach Holiday

Leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life far behind when you stay on Benbecula, an island of the Outer Hebrides in the Atlantic Ocean, off the west coast of Scotland. It is a place where legend and folklore are woven into an incredible landscape of white sands, lochs and lochans, and the pretty machair that is typical of this archipelago. Benbecula boasts bird life in abundance with buzzards and hen harriers, shorteared owls and golden eagles. The principle settlement is Balivanich, which means ‘Town of the Monks’ and dates back to the sixth century when a monastery occupied the site. In fact, there’s a temple to the east of Balivanich, believed to have been established by the monk St Toranan, who first set foot on the isle all those years ago. Other historic sites include the ruins of fourteenth century Borve Castle which stands in the tiny village of Torlum on the west side of the isle. On this sightseeing adventure, our exploring takes in both South Uist and North Uist, as well as Barra, possibly the only place on planet Earth where scheduled flights land on the beach.

Your Excursions

Guided Tour of Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay
Our tour today begins at our base on the Isle of Benbecula, then onwards to South Uist and Eriskay. Our local guide joins our coach to give us an insight into life on the islands and entertain us with tales of local history and myth. Landmarks to look out for will include Nunton House – residence of the Chief of the MacDonalds of Clanranald, Cula Bay – the most popular beach on Benbecula, the North Ford – a causeway opened by the Queen Mother in 1960, Ormacleit Castle – a ruined mansion dating from the early 18th century and the Kildonan Museum, showing the life and history of the islands.
Barra
This beautiful isle features gorgeous beaches, machair and moors. Perhaps learn about island culture at the heritage centre or watch for flights landing on the sand at Cockle Strand before the runway disappears beneath the waves at high tide. Admire the striking Kisimul Castle which stands on its own island in Castlebay.
Guided tour of North Uist
North Uist is a paradise for wildlife fans with its abundance of otters, seals and rare birds. It’s main village of Lochmaddy is home to a museum and art centre housing a café, shop and post office. This island features prehistoric sites such as the huge Neolithic chambered burial cairn of Barpa Langais and the Pobull Fhinn Stone Circle. There is also the Balranald Nature Reserve where rare birds can be spotted and Traigh Lar is a beautiful sweep of white beach, backed by sandy dunes and bordered by the machair grasses that are often found in the Hebrides.
