This refined holiday is based in the thirteenth century market town of Huntingdon, birthplace of Oliver Cromwell and custodian of the world’s only museum dedicated to the life and legacy of this enigmatic man. Huntingdon’s other attractions include a riverside park where you might care to take a boat trip or perhaps view the well-preserved medieval bridge. Out and about we visit Ely, home to an exquisite cathedral, fascinating museums and a picturesque waterfront. We spend a day in the university city of Cambridge and explore the Suffolk market town of Bury St Edmonds.
Ely Cathedral & City
Dating from the eleventh century, the magnificent Ely Cathedral dominates the landscape for miles with its unique Octagon and West Towers. Don’t miss the beautiful exhibits in the cathedral’s stained glass museum. Afterwards, there will be free time to explore elegant Ely. Perhaps get an insight into seventeenth century life at the house where Cromwell lived for over a decade, learn the city’s history from prehistoric times at the museum or just relax by the River Great Ouse.
Be inspired in Cambridge with must see attractions such as king’s College Chapel, the Neo-Gothic Bridge of Sighs, nineteenth century All Saints Church and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre – one of only four round churches in England.
Bury St Edmonds
A delightful town with heritage attractions such as a Gothic-Revival cathedral and the sixteenth century abbey with its internationally acclaimed gardens. There is also a splendid selection of traditional tearooms to tempt you.
