Our enchanting base for this wonderful holiday is a pretty little pueblo called Roses that stretches between the sea and mountains on Spain’s breathtaking Costa Brava. Relax on the beautiful beaches or hop aboard a pleasure cruise around the rocky coastline. A former Greek colony, you’ll find evidence of the city once built by these early settlers as well as a natural marina with a network of canals. Holiday highlights include our trip on the Little Yellow Train of the Pyrenees, one of the great railway journeys of the world where the track winds through leafy forests, past gushing streams and upwards to Mont Louis. On another day, we hop aboard the distinctive red and white Train du Pays Cathare et du Fenouilledes - a must do tourist railway trip that takes you deep into the verdant heart of the Pyrenees where you’ll be awestruck by the outstanding scenery.
Day One. We fly direct to Barcelona where we are transferred to the enchanting resort of Roses. We check into our hotel for our six night stay.
Day Two. Morning at leisure – dip your toes into the sandy beach or wander through the resort. In the afternoon we hop aboard the Roses Express land train and rumble through the town then into the serene mountain landscape of Cap de Creus Nature Park – a natural wonder with soaring cliffs, hidden coves and tiny islets. We return to our hotel in time to relax before dinner.
Day Three. We travel across the border into the French Pyrenees where we indulge in some wine tasting at the medieval walled commune of Thuir. In the afternoon, it’s all aboard the historic Little Yellow Train at Villefranche. A feast of sightseeing is in store as our carriage climbs upwards, scaling dramatic landscapes to Mont Louis where we are treated to breathtaking vistas of the rocky mountainous landscape, historic fortresses and a precariously perched old hermitage. After some time to look around, we return to our hotel by coach.
Day Four. Our treat today takes us into the Spanish Pyrenees and to the mountain resort of Nuria Here we embark on the sensational rack railway trip up to the Sanctuary of Nuria. This popular place of pilgrimage has ancient origins and traditions and is surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Day Five. Returning to France, we travel to Rivesaltes where we board the century old Train du Pays Cathare et du Fenouilledes. Sit back and relax as you trundle though a land of vines and castles, slowly climbing until you reach the quaint hamlet of Axat where you’ll have free time to explore.
Day Six. Day at leisure. Perhaps you’d like to visit the Citadel of Roses, an imposing star shaped military fortification with a walled enclosure dating from the sixteenth century. Maybe you’d rather hop aboard a glass bottomed boat for a sail around the coastline or simply laze on the beach.
Day Seven. We transfer to Barcelona Airport for our return flight.
