Overview

Durham City is steeped in a thousand years of history and boasts a distinctive collection of museums, galleries and historic houses all bringing the past to life. Perhaps explore the eleventh century cathedral and castle or visit the Heritage Centre & Museum which is housed in a historic church with artefacts showcasing local history. A holiday highlight will be our day at the world famous Beamish Open Air Museum for a unique insight into how lives were lived in bygone days. Explore the 1900s town to see how families struggled in the years leading up to the First World War and where authentic attractions include the town stables, a traditional pub and a replica garage with typical vehicles from the era. We also head for Whitby to follow in the footsteps of Captain Cook taking in sights such as the seventeenth century harbourside house where the great explorer came to serve his apprenticeship.
